Brimstone's response to the FSRI and IAFF notices (May/June 2025) regarding assessment of EV firefighting techniques
In May 2025, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) issued a warning about a potential explosion hazard when fire blankets are used during electric vehicle (EV) fire suppression efforts when there is battery involvement.
This warning prompted the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) to issue an advisory statement recommending that members not deploy a fire blanket for suppression efforts when responding to an EV fire.
Not surprisingly, there have been a lot of questions that have been raised as a result of this warning, so we at Brimstone Fire Protection wanted to explain what we know about the warning and some information that would be helpful as you plan to approach an electric vehicle fire. We've also created a video that offers guidance on best practices.
